The second instalment in my Fashion Focus series is all about bum bags. An item thats been in and out of the fashion world for years now, over 2018 it came back in full force and I’ve finally found a way of styling it that goes with my aesthetic. Often used at festivals or by my mum at car boot sales in the 90’s, the bum bag is a practical yet slightly controversial bag. Normally worn around the waist, this year sees the bum bag styled in a fresh new way that incorporates practicality with one of the most up and coming trends – street style.
At the forefront of the designers, leading the way with the bum bag were Gucci. Their bejewelled bum bags in velvet sold out across stores and we replicated on the high street numerous times. On the other hand, going back to it’s original sporty roots, Off-White and Louis Vuitton show cased bum bags across the chest with over sized logos emblazoned on the straps. The latter is the option of styling I’ve gone for. For me, the typically sporty style of bum bag suits my clothing better and adds a juxtaposition for my daily outfits. I’ve really enjoyed styling this ‘iets frans’ bum bag (purchased from Urban Outfitters) with my recent outfits for a sporty addition plus a practicality that doesn’t come with other bags. We’ve also seen the likes of Bella Hadid sporting her bum bags over the shoulder like a 90’s shoulder bag, something I’ve been doing recently with mine.
With the amount of different ways to wear it, the effortlessness and compact size of the bum bag, it truly is something worth investing in. The trend may not be around for long but will always come back and when it does, your 2018 bum bag can be pulled out again and dusted off and then you can call it vintage.
